Many skinks have long tails. If a predator grabs a tail, it can fall off. This is called autotomy. The tail can grow back in three to four months. Some skinks can also hide using camouflage. This helps them blend into their homes.

Skinks like to dig in the dirt. They make tunnels to stay safe. They use their tongues to sniff the air. This helps them find food. Most skinks eat insects like flies and beetles. Some also eat worms or snails. Some skinks are even omnivorous. This means they eat both plants and meat. Most skinks are active during the day. They like to sit on rocks to get warm.
