Skink

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Skinks are a very large and diverse family of lizards. They belong to the group called Scincidae. There are more than 1,500 different species of skinks in the world. They live in many different places across the globe. You can find them in deserts, mountains, and grasslands. However, they do not live in very cold arctic regions.

Most skinks have legs that are quite small for their bodies. Some types, like the genus Typhlosaurus, have no legs at all. Other skinks, like the genus Neoseps, have very few toes. These legless skinks move much like snakes do.

Many skinks have a special way to stay safe from predators. They have long tails that can fall off if something grabs them. This process is called autotomy. If the skink is able to, it can grow a new tail. This regrowth usually takes about three to four months. Some skinks have short, stumpy tails and cannot grow them back. Skinks also use camouflage to hide in their homes. Some even have green blood because of a waste product called biliverdin.

Scientists have found that skinks have been around for a very long time. The oldest known skink is called Electroscincus zedi. It was found in Burmese amber from Myanmar. This fossil dates back to about 100 million years ago. Other fossils of skink-like lizards come from the Cretaceous period. We also find definite fossils of modern groups from the Miocene period. These old bones help us see how skinks changed over time.

Skinks are often busy hunters during the day. Most species are diurnal, which means they are active while the sun is up. They use their tongues to sniff the air for food. Most skinks eat insects like flies, beetles, and caterpillars. Some also eat worms, snails, or even small rodents. A few species are omnivorous and eat plants too. The Solomon Islands skink is the largest known species. It can grow to be about 3 feet long.

Skinks are great at finding safe places to live and grow. Many species like to dig tunnels underground to stay safe. They might hide in thick leaves or under buildings. Most skinks lay eggs in small white clutches. However, about 45% of skink species give birth to live young. Some species even have a placenta to feed their babies. This is a way of living that is very similar to mammals.
