Blind snakes are a special group of snakes.

They are also called thread snakes. Most of them have thin, round bodies. They have small, narrow heads. These snakes are fossorial. This means they live underground or in leaf litter.

Their name comes from two Greek words. One word means earthworm. The other word means snake. This describes how they look and live. They have very small eyes. Their eyes sit under thick scales. We call these scales spectacles. These scales are cloudy. This makes it hard for the snakes to see.

Most blind snakes eat tiny bugs. They like ant eggs or termite eggs. They find food by following smells. Some snakes even wave their heads in the air. This helps them find insect nests.

These snakes lay eggs. You might see them above ground after a rain. This happens because their burrows flood. Most blind snakes are very small. However, an old fossil called Boipeba was over one meter long.
