Because they live in dark environments, they have developed very different physical traits than most other snakes.

The most striking feature of these snakes is their reduced eyesight. Their eyes are very small and are located beneath their head scales. In most snakes, these scales are called spectacles and are clear. In Scolecophidia, however, the spectacles are opaque, which means they are cloudy or non-transparent. This physical trait makes it very difficult for them to see clearly. Scientists believe this happened because their ancestors lived underground where light is scarce. Finally, the Xenotyphlopidae, or Malagasy blind snakes, are found only on the island of Madagascar.

The history of these snakes stretches back to the Middle Jurassic period. Scientists believe they originally evolved on the ancient supercontinent called Gondwana. During the Mesozoic era, different groups split apart as Gondwana broke into smaller pieces. For example, the Xenotyphlopidae remained isolated on Madagascar. They are among the only land vertebrates on the island whose isolation was caused by the land physically breaking away. Other families, like the Typhlopidae, moved across the world over millions of years. South American typhlopids likely arrived by rafting across the Atlantic Ocean about 60 million years ago. They later reached the Caribbean about 33 million years ago.

Fossil evidence helps us understand how these snakes have changed over time. The earliest known fossil is Boipeba tayasuensis, which was discovered in Brazil. This species lived during the Late Cretaceous period. Unlike many modern blind snakes, Boipeba tayasuensis was quite large, measuring over one meter in length. Most species in the Scolecophidia infraorder today are much smaller than this. Other early fossils have been found in Morocco from the Paleocene and in Europe from the Eocene. Scientists have even identified possible typhlopid skin preserved in Dominican amber.

Feeding habits for these snakes are very specialized. Most Scolecophidia feed on invertebrates, specifically the eggs of ants or termites. They find these tiny meals by following chemical trails left by the insects. Some species, like Tricheilostomata macrolepis, will climb trees to find nests. They wave their heads side to side to detect chemical scents in the air. Some members of the Leptotyphlopidae family are even specialists that eat only one type of insect. They may use a "binge feeding" pattern to eat many eggs at once.

Because of their unique biology, these snakes are important for scientific study. They serve as models for understanding how evolution works in the larger group of snakes, or Serpentes. By studying them, researchers learn more about how body shapes, feeding habits, and reproduction change over time. For instance, most of these families lack a left lung and have a vestigial left lung, which is a leftover part that no longer functions fully. They also lack cranial infrared receptors, which are organs used by other snakes to sense heat. These specific traits help scientists map out the complex history of how all snakes evolved.
