They live in warm places. These places include the Americas and the West Indies. Some live in the United States.

Most anoles are green or brown. Many can change their color. This happens because of special skin cells called chromatophores. These cells change color when the lizard feels stress. They may also change based on light. Some lizards change from green to brown in minutes.

Anoles are great at climbing. They have tiny pads on their toes. These pads have microscopic hairs called setae. These hairs help the lizard stick to surfaces.

They can even run up windows!

Many males have a bright flap of skin on their throat. This is called a dewlap. They use it to show off or signal others. Anoles are active during the day. They mostly eat small animals like insects. Some also eat flowers and fruit. Most anoles are very territorial. This means they stay in their own space.
