Most live in Africa. Many also live in Madagascar. Some live in Asia and Europe.

These lizards have many cool parts. They have a prehensile tail. This means the tail can grip things like a hand. They use it as a fifth limb to stay steady in trees.

Their eyes are also special. Each eye can move on its own. This lets the brain see two different views at once. When they hunt, both eyes look forward to see clearly.

Chameleons are famous for changing color. They do this for many reasons. They use color to hide from predators. They also use color to talk to other chameleons.

Color helps them show if they are angry or shy.

They even change color to stay warm. Chameleons are ectothermic. This means they use the sun to change their body heat. A dark color soaks up heat. A light color reflects heat away. This helps them stay at the right temperature.
