It is native to South and Southeast Asia and Near Oceania. People call it many names, like the Asian house gecko or the tiktiki. These lizards are nocturnal, which means they sleep during the day. They come out to hunt at night. You might hear them chirping near your home.

They can live for about 7 years. They are not venomous and are not harmful to humans. However, a gecko might bite if it feels very scared.

These geckos follow a special way of living to stay active. They are ectothermic, or cold-blooded. This means they cannot make their own body heat. Instead, they use their behavior to manage their temperature. They might sit in the sunlight to warm up. They also like to stay in warm, humid areas.

When it gets cold, they can enter a state called brumation. This helps them survive during colder months. They prefer to be near cracks where they can hide quickly. This helps them stay safe from danger.

Finding food is a big part of their nightly routine. The gecko is a hunter that loves urban areas. It stays close to city lights to find meals. Many insects, like moths and flies, gather around porch lights.

The gecko eats cockroaches, termites, bees, and spiders. It even eats small beetles and some molluscs. Sometimes, they might even eat smaller geckos. This diet helps them grow strong in busy cities. They are very good at finding food in human neighborhoods.

We have learned a lot about these lizards over time. In Mexico, the first ones were found in Acapulco in March 1895. They likely traveled there on ships or in cargo. By the early 1940s, they were living all over that region.

Now, they are found in many places like Australia and the Caribbean. They can live in 21 of the 32 Mexican states. Because they are so good at moving to new places, scientists watch them closely. They want to make sure they do not hurt native animals.

Watching a gecko is like watching a tiny survival expert. They can live in many different types of places. They can thrive in thick forests or near big cities.

Some males have very large heads to help them fight for territory. This helps them keep their space in crowded areas. Females are different and often have longer legs to help them move fast. Even though they are small, they are very tough. They show us how animals adapt to live alongside people.
