Amblypygi are a special group of arachnids. People often call them whip-spiders or tailless whip-scorpions. The name amblypygid actually means "blunt tail." This refers to the fact that they lack a tail called a flagellum. Unlike many other arachnids, they do not have venom. They also do not have glands to make silk.

These creatures are very important to study because they show unique ways of living. As of 2023, scientists have found around 260 different species. These belong to 17 different genera and five main families.

Their bodies have a very interesting way of working. They have two main body segments called the prosoma and the opisthosoma. Most species have eight eyes to help them see in the dark. They use only six of their eight legs to walk. They move in a sideways way, much like a crab. The first pair of legs are very long and thin. These are called antenniform legs, which act like antennae.

They use these thin legs to feel their way around. When they find food, they use large arms called pedipalps. These pedipalps have sharp spines to grab and hold prey.

We have known about these animals for a very long time. Fossilized amblypygids have been found in the ground. These fossils date back to the Carboniferous period. One example of an ancient type is called Weygoldtina.

This shows that these creatures have been around for millions of years. They have lived through many different eras of Earth's history. Scientists continue to study them to learn more about the past.

Amblypygids live in many warm and wet places. You can find them in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. They love humid environments like caves or leaf litter. Many species are nocturnal, which means they are active at night.

Some species even live underground. Some mothers show social behavior by talking to their young. They use their long front legs to communicate with their babies.

This is quite rare for arachnids to do.

Many people find these animals interesting enough to keep as pets. Genera like Phrynus and Charon are often sold in stores. They live in tall tanks with lots of climbing space. This helps them when they need to molt. Molting is when they shed their old, hard outer skin.

They hang upside down to let gravity help them. This process helps the old skin fall away easily. Most whip-spiders live for 5 to 10 years.
