It helps vendors sell food to people walking by. You can find these carts in cities all over the world. They come in two main styles. In one style, the cook stays inside the cart. They serve food through a small window.

In the other style, the cook stands next to the cart. The cart holds all the storage and cooking tools. A grill is often part of this setup.

Food carts are not the same as food trucks. They do not have their own engines to drive. A person or an animal can push them. A vehicle can also tow them along the road.

There are many ways these carts move from place to place. Some vendors use a person to push a small cart. This is helpful in tight spaces where cars cannot go. Other carts are larger and heavier. These are usually pulled behind a 4x4 vehicle. The type of food being sold often decides the cart's design. A vendor might need a large grill for certain meals. They might need more storage for others. This makes the cart a very useful tool for a business.

Food carts have a very long history. They likely began with the early Greeks and Romans. Traders used old hand-carts to sell things. They also used small carts pulled by animals. Being mobile is a huge advantage for these traders. If one spot does not sell much, they can move. They can also carry goods easily to and from storage. This helped them bring food directly to the marketplace.

Railways helped food carts grow very quickly. Early trains did not always have dining cars. Passengers in open carriages needed warm food and drinks. Trains also had to stop for coal and water. This gave travelers time to eat or use the toilet. Many travelers were poor and could not stay in hotels. They needed quick snacks at the station instead.

Some traders even used old luggage carts from stations. They changed these carts into food carts. These were a great size to fit through station doors.

Today, modern engineering has changed how carts look. Many new carts use stainless steel or aluminum. Some are even made of fiber reinforced plastic. These materials are very strong and easy to clean. Some modern carts can even drive themselves!

Many carts are linked to real restaurants. They often sell the exact same food as the main shop. This lets the restaurant reach more people on the street. From small stands to high-tech machines, carts stay important.
