This idea started at a California restaurant called Pig Stand Number 21 in 1931. You can also use a phone or computer to order food for delivery. Since 2008, many people use satellite navigation to track their delivery vehicles in real time. Some shops even used to promise delivery in 30 minutes or it was free. This was stopped in the United States in 1993 to prevent accidents.

In medieval London, vendors sold hot meat pies and French wine. In 10th and 11th century China, people bought pastries like yuebing in cities like Kaifeng. Aztec marketplaces sold almost 50 types of tamales made with meat or fruit. In the 19th century, workers in Mumbai used tiffin boxes to get meals. These traditions show how much people have always valued quick, tasty food.

Food needs special containers to stay fresh and warm while you travel.

Many meals come in paper, plastic, or foam boxes. You might see an oyster pail, which is a folded paperboard container. In Britain, shops once wrapped fish and chips in old newspapers. Now, they often use special paper that just looks like a newspaper. Some containers, like foam or thick fiberboard, help keep the food hot. Aluminum is also a popular choice because it does not cost much.

Using all these containers can create a lot of waste in landfills. Because of this, many places are making new rules to help the planet. In 2013, Taiwan banned disposable tableware in its schools, hospitals, and government offices. Munich, Germany, has had rules against disposable containers at large events since 1991. This helped reduce the waste from the huge Oktoberfest festival. In China, the amount of packaging waste grew very quickly between 2015 and 2017. People are finding new ways to enjoy take-out while being more careful with the earth.
