A food court is a busy indoor plaza for eating.

You can find these spaces in shopping malls, airports, and even parks. Some food courts are even part of schools or universities. They are special because many different food stalls sit right next to each other. This lets people choose from many different meals in one spot. It is a place where people can rest and enjoy a quick bite.

Eating at a food court follows a simple set of steps. First, you walk up to a vendor's service counter to order. Then, you carry your meal to a common dining area. Many people use a standard food tray to hold everything. You might use plastic tools like a spork to eat. A spork is a handy tool that works as both a spoon and a fork. Some places, like Carrefour Laval, even use solid dinnerware instead.

Food courts have an interesting history in different countries. The first successful mall food court in the United States opened in March 1974. It was located at the Paramus Park mall in New Jersey. However, a food court in Toronto, Canada, was built three years earlier. In Thailand, the first food court was the Mahbunkhrong Food Center. It opened on February 7, 1985, inside the Mahbunkhrong Center. This was once the largest food court in that country.

Today, food courts are changing to offer even more variety. Some have become "food halls," which focus on higher quality dining. For example, the Time Out Market in Lisbon opened in 2014. It brings local chefs together under one roof to share their skills. You can find regional treats there like pastel de nata or Alentejo ham. In the United States, many people now spend about 47 percent of their food budget eating out. This includes eating at restaurants or food courts.

Food courts also help us learn about different cultures through food. Because of globalization, you can find many types of cuisine in one place. You might see McDonald's serving a McAloo Tikki Burger in India. This vegetarian burger was made to fit local cultural needs. You can even find Japanese-inspired sushi in many food courts. A chef named Hidekazu Tojo helped make sushi popular in the West. He created the California roll in 1971.
