The tool has a scoop like a spoon. It also has two to four sharp points called tines. These tines look just like the teeth on a fork. This design makes it easy to eat many kinds of food. You can scoop up soup or pick up noodles. It is a handy tool for anyone who wants to save space.

Using a spork is a simple way to eat. You use the scooped part to hold liquids or small bits. Then, you use the tines to grab solid pieces of food. Some special versions even include a knife edge.

The Van Brode Milling Company once made a version with a spoon, fork, and knife. These tools are made from many different materials. You might find them made of silver or stainless steel. Some are made of aluminum, copper, or titanium. Many disposable ones are made of plastic.

People have been making these tools for a long time. A man named Samuel W. Francis invented a version in 1874. He made a tool that combined a spoon, fork, and knife. Later, Harry L. McCoy got a patent for a cutting spoon in 1908. In 1912, Frank Emmenegger made a spoon with a tined edge.

Even before people used the word "spork," these inventions existed. The name "spork" appeared in a dictionary in 1909. It is a portmanteau, which means it joins two words together.

Many different groups use sporks every day. Fast food restaurants and schools often use them. Airlines and militaries use them too.

Backpackers and Scouts love them because they are lightweight. They save a lot of room in a bag. In the United States, prisons often use plastic sporks. This is because plastic is hard to turn into a weapon. In 1951, Hyde W. Ballard applied to trademark the name "Spork." He wanted to use it for stainless steel tools.

Sporks are a great example of how one tool can do two jobs. They are much like the tools you use at home. You might use a spoon for cereal or a fork for salad. A spork lets you do both without switching tools. This makes it perfect for eating on the go. It is a smart way to make eating easier. Whether you are camping or on a plane, a spork is a helpful friend.
