A food court is a specialized indoor plaza designed for communal dining.

It is a common area located within a larger facility, such as a shopping mall, airport, or park. These spaces are contiguous with the counters of several different food vendors. This layout allows many different businesses to share one central dining space. In some parts of the world, like Asia-Pacific, these are called food halls or hawker centres. They serve as convenient hubs where people can find a variety of meals in a single location.

The process of dining in a food court follows a specific sequence. First, a customer approaches a specific vendor's service counter to place an order. Once the food is prepared, the customer carries the meal to a shared seating area. To make this easier, many courts provide a standardized food tray used by all vendors. Customers may choose to eat on-site or request takeout. For takeout, food is often placed in plastic or foam containers.

While many courts use plastic cutlery or sporks to save resources, some locations like Carrefour Laval require the use of solid dinnerware.

Food courts are constructed using specific materials to ensure they remain clean. Common materials include tile, linoleum, Formica, stainless steel, and glass. These surfaces are chosen because they facilitate easy cleanup after many people have eaten.

The internal economy of a food court is quite complex. Although the court operates as one unit, each vendor acts independently. They share the same pool of customers and often compete for clientele. If one vendor improves their quality, it can decrease demand for others. However, higher quality from any vendor can also improve the reputation of the entire food court.

The history of the modern food court shows how the concept has evolved over decades. The first successful shopping mall food court in the United States opened in March 1974 at Paramus Park in New Jersey. However, a food court was actually built in Toronto, Canada, three years earlier at Sherway Gardens. In Thailand, the Mahbunkhrong Food Center opened on February 7, 1985. It was the largest food court in the country at that time.

Since the 1990s, these spaces have become a staple of shopping mall culture.

Economic data shows how important these spaces are to large businesses. In 2009, mall sales reached approximately $49 billion. During that same year, food court sales per square foot only declined by 1.7 percent. This was much better than full-service restaurants, which saw a 6 percent decline.

Some companies, like Costco, use food courts as a major business strategy. By placing the food court near the exit, they encourage customers to stay in the store longer. Costco's food court operations generate about $1 billion in revenue annually.

Today, the concept is shifting toward high-quality dining experiences known as food halls. The Time Out Market in Lisbon, which began in 2014, is a prime example. It curates a selection of local chefs and regional delicacies under one roof.

Customers can find traditional items like pastel de nata or Alentejo ham alongside global options. This trend reflects a growing demand for gourmet variety. Modern malls are even adding bars and craft breweries to attract younger crowds.

Globalization has also changed what people find in food courts around the world. Large chains now use localization to respect regional customs. For example, McDonald's created the McAloo Tikki Burger in India to provide a vegetarian option.

This allows the brand to maintain its identity while meeting local dietary needs. Globalization also allows people to try foods from distant places. In 1971, chef Hidekazu Tojo created the California roll to help popularize sushi in the West. Now, Japanese-inspired dishes are common in food courts globally.
