Most restaurants use a supply chain to get ingredients. This means a central place sends the same supplies to every shop. This helps the food taste the same everywhere. Workers often cook food using a grill, a microwave, or a deep-fryer. They might cook things "to stock," which means making them before someone asks. Other times, they cook "to order" when a customer pays. Many shops use computers to track these orders in real time.

The McDonald brothers opened a barbecue stand in California in 1940. They created the "Speedee Service System" to work like a factory line. Later, a man named Ray Kroc joined them and grew McDonald's into a huge company. In Florida, two men named James McLamore and David Edgerton started Burger King. They used a special tool called an Insta-Broiler to cook burgers. These companies became multinational corporations with stores all over the world. They changed how families eat by making food easy to grab during a car trip.

Today, fast food is part of many different ways of eating.

You can find fast-casual restaurants that are a mix of quick service and sit-down dining. You can also find catering trucks, which are often called food trucks. These trucks park near places where people work to serve them quickly. Many restaurants also offer value meals to help people save money. A value meal usually bundles a main item, fries, and a drink together. This makes it a fun and easy way to enjoy a quick meal.
