Food in the Middle Ages was about much more than just hunger. It was a way to show where a person stood in society.

During this time, which lasted from the 5th to the 15th century, what you ate told others about your wealth. Most people were commoners who worked hard in the fields. They ate simple, coarse foods to keep their strength up. For them, meals were often about basic survival and togetherness.

Commoners often ate barley, oats, or rye as bread, porridge, or pasta. They also enjoyed cheese, fruits, and vegetables. The nobility, however, ate much more expensive foods. They enjoyed meat from hunting, which was called game. Most butchers sold pork and chicken, but beef was less common because it required more land.

The rich also used exotic spices like ginger, saffron, and black pepper. They loved sweet and sour flavors made from wine, vinegar, or verjuice.

Religion played a huge role in the history of medieval eating.

The Church had many fast days, like Lent, when meat and dairy were forbidden. These rules were meant to teach self-restraint and spiritual focus. To follow these rules, people became very creative with their cooking. They used almond milk as a rich alternative to animal milk. They even made "fake eggs" by stuffing empty shells with fish roe and almond milk.

Some people even argued that beaver tails were like fish so they could eat them during fasts.

In the Mediterranean, wheat was the most important grain for everyone. As Christianity spread north, the use of wheat also moved to colder areas. However, the Black Death pandemic between 1347 and 1352 changed things again. Because so many people died, much farmland was left empty. This meant there was less wheat and oats available. Instead, Europeans began eating more animal protein like beef, goats, and sheep.

In the Middle Ages, social classes were very strict. There were commoners, the clergy, and the nobility. Even laws called sumptuary laws were made to stop middle-class merchants from buying luxury foods. People believed your food should match your physical body and your work. A lord's digestive system was thought to be more refined than a laborer's. This meant the rich had to eat finer, more complex meals.
