Most people were commoners. They ate simple foods like barley, oats, or rye. They made bread, porridge, and pasta from these grains. The poor also ate cheese, fruit, and vegetables.

Rich people, like the nobility, ate much more. They enjoyed meat from hunting, called game. They also ate pork and chicken. Nobles used expensive spices like ginger and saffron. They often mixed sweet and sour flavors with wine or vinegar. They even used almond milk to make thick sauces.

Religion also changed what people ate. The Church had many fast days. On these days, people could not eat meat or dairy. To follow the rules, some people were very clever. They made fake eggs using almond milk. They even made food look like meat. Some thought beaver tails were like fish, so they ate them.
