A hot dog is a popular snack made of sausage. It is usually served inside a partially sliced bun.

You might call the sausage a frankfurter or a wiener. These names come from cities in Europe. People love to eat them with many different toppings. You can add mustard, ketchup, or relish to your meal. Some people like onions, cheese, or even bacon on top.

There are many ways to prepare this food. You can boil, grill, steam, or even pan-fry the sausage. Some cooks even cut the sausage into a spiral shape. This helps it cook better and fit the bun perfectly.

Making hot dogs involves a special way of mixing ingredients. Workers put meat, spices, and salt into large vats. Fast blades grind and mix everything together in one step.

Then, the mixture is pushed through tubes into casings. Some sausages use a natural casing made from sheep intestines. These have a firm texture and a "snap" when you bite them.

Most hot dogs in the U.S. are skinless. This means the outer tube is removed after cooking. A man named Erwin O. Freund helped invent this in Chicago in 1925. He called the new casings "Nojax," which meant "no jackets."

Long ago, these sausages began in Germany. The Frankfurter Würstchen has been known since the 13th century.

These sausages were even given to people during imperial coronations. A butcher named Johann Georg Lahner brought these sausages to Vienna. He added beef to the pork mixture and called them Frankfurters. In Austria, people often use the term Frankfurter. In German-speaking countries, they are often called Wiener or "little sausages." This helps people tell them apart from the original pork versions from Frankfurt.

It is not certain who first put the sausage in a bun. One story says Harry M. Stevens did this in 1901. He worked at the New York Polo Grounds. He used small French rolls because he ran out of waxed paper.

Another story involves a man named Feuchtwanger in the Midwest. His wife suggested using a bun so customers would not burn their hands. They used to give out white gloves, but customers kept them as souvenirs.

A third idea comes from Charles Feltman. He had a special cart at Coney Island in 1867. His cart had a stove for boiling and a spot for fresh buns.

Today, hot dogs are a huge part of American life. They are very common at baseball games and public events.

Americans eat about 20 billion hot dogs every year. There are even famous eating contests, like the one at Nathan's. People even argue about whether a hot dog is a sandwich. The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council says it is not. However, the dictionary says it is. Even the Supreme Court has discussed this fun debate. It is a food that brings many people together.
