They belong to a group called Argulidae. These bugs are crustaceans. Most live in fresh water. Some live in the sea. They are found all over the world. You will not find them in Antarctica. They live on fish, frogs, and even alligators.

These lice have flat, oval bodies. They use special parts to stay on a host. Some have hooks. Others have suction cups. They use these to grab on tight. They eat blood or mucus from the host. After they eat, they wait two to three weeks to feed again.

Fish lice do not stay on one fish forever. They leave the fish to mate and lay eggs. The females lay eggs on rocks or plants. The eggs hatch into tiny larvae. These larvae must find a fish to live on.

Too many lice can be a problem. In fish farms, they can cause many fish to die. They can also hurt pet fish in tanks. Scientists study ways to stop them. One study used tobacco leaf dust to help fish.
