Argulidae

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Fish lice are tiny creatures that live on other animals.

Argulus

They belong to a group called Argulidae. These small animals are parasitic crustaceans. This means they live on a host to get food. They belong to the class Ichthyostraca. Most of them are part of the order Arguloida. Some scientists think there might be a second family called Dipteropeltidae. These creatures are very important to study in our waters. They can change how fish live in the wild.

These lice have a very special way of staying attached.

They have flat and oval bodies. Most are covered by a broad carapace, which is a hard shell. They use different tools to grab onto their hosts. Some have toothed hooks on their mouths. Others have suction cups made from their first maxillae. These are special parts used for sucking. The genus Dolops is different because it keeps claw-like parts even as an adult. They use four pairs of legs to swim when they are not attached.

Scientists have studied how these animals grow and live.

For a long time, people thought they were copepods. Now, we know they are a separate group called Branchiura. We know there are about 170 different species. These species live in four different genera. Most of these animals live in the Afrotropical and Neotropical realms. This means they are often found in Africa and South America. You will not find them in the cold of Antarctica.

Each fish louse has its own way of life.

They can be as small as a few millimeters. Some can grow to be over 30 mm long. Females are usually larger than the males. The males have special parts on their legs. Both sexes have reproductive organs on their abdomens. Females have a spermatheca to store sperm. Some species eat the blood of a fish. Others eat mucus or other materials from the skin. They often wait two to three weeks between meals.

These tiny animals can have a big impact on the world.

They are found in both salt water and fresh water. In North America, only the genus Argulus lives in fresh water. If too many lice live on fish, it can be a hard job for the fish to survive. In fish farms, they can cause many fish to die. They can also hurt pet fish in home aquariums. Some researchers study how to stop them. One study looked at using tobacco leaf dust to help fish.
