Cephalaspis was an extinct fish. It lived during the early Devonian period.

This fish was about the size of a trout. It had a heavy head shield. This shield acted like armor. It helped protect the fish from predators. The armor also provided calcium. This was helpful in freshwater with little calcium.

The fish was a bottom-feeder. Its mouth was right under its head. It used its plow-like head to stir up sand. This helped it find worms and small creatures. It also ate detritus. Detritus is bits of dead stuff in the water.

The fish used sensory patches to find food. These patches were on its head shield. They helped it sense worms in the mud. Scientists once thought many species were Cephalaspis. A study in 2009 changed this. Now, most of those species belong to other groups. Only one species, Cephalaspis lyelli, is truly in this group.
