Allen Klein was a famous American businessman.

He worked in the music industry. His job was to help musicians make more money. He was known as a very tough negotiator. This means he was very strong when making deals. He helped many famous people. These stars included Sam Cooke, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones. Klein changed the way music companies paid their artists. He became one of the most powerful people in music during his time.

Klein used a special way to work with his clients. He called these "buy/sell agreements."

In these deals, a company owned by Klein acted as a middleman. This company stood between the musician and the record label. Klein's company would own the rights to the music. It would also make the records and sell them. Then, the company would pay the artist their royalties. This helped musicians get more cash. It also helped them pay less in taxes by spreading payments over many years.

Klein grew up in Newark, New Jersey.

He was the only son of immigrants. His mother died when he was young. He lived with his grandparents and in an orphanage for a while. He graduated from Weequahic High School in 1950. He later served in the U.S. Army as a clerk typist. After the war, he used the G.I. Bill to study accounting. He graduated from Upsala College in 1957. He even worked at an accounting firm in Manhattan.

Klein's career had many big moments and numbers.

He first helped singers Buddy Knox and Jimmy Bowen get their money. In 1963, he began working with the great Sam Cooke. Klein helped Cooke get a huge deal with RCA Records. Later, he worked with the Rolling Stones. In 1965, he helped the Stones get a $1.25 million advance from Decca Records. He also helped them get a $600,000 deal with London Records. By another year, the Stones were guaranteed $2.6 million. This was even more than the Beatles were making at that time.

While Klein made money for artists, he also made a lot for himself.

Sometimes he did this without the artists knowing. The Rolling Stones later had many legal fights with him. They said he kept their money and took their song rights. They even had to move to France in 1971 because of tax issues. Klein also had trouble with the government. In 1980, he went to jail for two months. This was because of a mistake on his 1972 tax return. His life shows how complicated the business of music can be.
