He was born in Oak Park, Illinois, on October 5, 1902. Before he worked with burgers, he had many different jobs. He sold paper cups and worked as a musician. He even served as an ambulance driver during World War I. Later, he became a salesman for milkshake mixers. These early jobs helped him learn how to work with many people.

In 1954, Kroc visited a burger restaurant in San Bernardino, California. The shop was owned by brothers named Richard and Maurice McDonald. Kroc saw how fast and efficient their kitchen was. He wanted to help them grow using a system called franchising. A franchise lets people open their own shops using a famous name. Kroc worked as their agent for several years before buying the whole company in 1961 for $2.7 million.

Kroc changed how the business worked to make it grow very fast. He wanted every burger to taste exactly the same in every city. To do this, he created strict rules for all his restaurants. He set rules for cooking times and how much food to use. He even told owners to give money back if an order was wrong. He also chose to sell only one store to each person. This allowed him to keep control over the quality of the food.

By the time Kroc died in 1984, McDonald's was everywhere. There were 7,500 restaurants in the United States and 31 other countries. In 1983, the company made more than $8 billion in sales. Kroc also had a big interest in baseball. He bought the San Diego Padres team in 1974 for $12 million. He loved the sport and was a very big fan of his team. He even once told a crowd of fans that the players were playing badly!

Ray Kroc also cared about helping others through charity. He helped support the Ronald McDonald House. This group provides free housing for families with children in hospitals. His wife, Joan Kroc, was also a very kind person.
