He helped start the global company called Sony. He worked closely with his partner, Masaru Ibuka. Together, they wanted to create new kinds of technology. Morita was born in Nagoya. His family had a business making food like miso and soy sauce. However, Akio loved math and physics more. He graduated from Osaka Imperial University in 1944. This passion for science helped him later in life.

Sony grew by making many new inventions. In 1946, the company began with about 20 workers. They used 190,000 yen to start their business. In 1949, they made magnetic recording tape. Later, they used transistor technology to make small tools. A transistor is a tiny part used in electronics. In 1957, Sony made a very small radio. Morita even had workers wear shirts with big pockets. He did this to show how portable the radio was.

Morita and Ibuka met during World War II. They were both in the Imperial Japanese Navy. They met in a study group for research. After the war, Ibuka opened a repair shop in Tokyo. Morita saw an article about this shop in a newspaper. He decided to join Ibuka to start something big. In 1958, they chose the name Sony. This name comes from the Latin word "sonus," which means sound. It also uses the word "sonny," which was a common expression.

Sony changed how people listen to music. In 1979, they introduced the Walkman. This was one of the first portable music players. In 1982, Sony launched the first compact disc player. This player used the CD, a new way to store data. Sony also helped make the 3.5-inch floppy disk. This became a standard way to save computer information. Morita also wanted to link film, music, and electronics together. He bought companies like Columbia Pictures to help this happen.
