EMI was a massive British company that changed how we hear music and see science. It was formed in March 1931 in London. This happened when two older firms joined together. One was the Columbia Graphophone Company. The other was the Gramophone Company. This new group was called Electric and Musical Industries.

They did much more than just sell records. They built tools for sound and worked on big science projects. For a long time, they were one of the biggest music groups in the world.

One way EMI worked was by making tools for new technology. In 1934, a team led by Sir Isaac Shoenberg made a system for television broadcasting. Later, they made the EMI 2001 colour television camera. This camera was used by the BBC and other companies for many years. They also worked on radar during World War II. This helped with things like finding targets or guiding missiles. They even built a computer in the 1950s to help with payroll.

Science at EMI led to some very important discoveries. An engineer named Godfrey Hounsfield worked at their labs in Hayes. In the early 1970s, he helped create the first CT scanner. A CT scanner is a medical tool that lets doctors see inside a person. This invention changed how doctors look at the body. Because of this, Hounsfield won a Nobel Prize in 1979.

This shows how a company can help make the world a healthier place.

Music was also a huge part of their history. In 1931, they opened famous studios at Abbey Road in London. They owned many famous labels like Parlophone and Capitol Records. Many legendary artists recorded their music there. The Beatles were one of their most famous groups. They even used the EMI headquarters for some of their photos. Other great stars included Frank Sinatra and Nat 'King' Cole. The company held over 150,000 old recordings in a special room. This room stays at a steady temperature to keep the records safe.

Today, the company looks very different than it did in 1931. EMI faced many financial problems over the years. It went through many changes and owners. In 2012, the big company was divided and sold. Most of its music parts went to Universal Music Group. The Parlophone label went to Warner Music. Even though the big company split up, its work lives on. You can still hear the music they helped make on your favorite devices. Their history is part of the music you listen to every day.
