How does a music group like this work? WMG owns and runs many famous record labels. A record label is a company that helps artists record and sell their music. Some of these well-known labels include Atlantic, Elektra, and Reprise. They also own Parlophone and Sire. WMG also owns Warner Chappell Music, which is a huge music publisher. A publisher helps manage the rights to songs so creators get paid.

The history of WMG began in the late 1950s. In 1958, Warner Bros. Records was created in Burbank, California. It started in an office above a film studio's machine shop. The company wanted to make sure its movie stars could record music too. In 1963, the company bought Reprise Records, which was started by Frank Sinatra. Later, in 1967, the company bought Atlantic Records. This was a very important step for their growth.

Many famous musicians have worked with these labels over the years. For example, Neil Young has recorded for several Warner-owned labels like Atlantic and Reprise. In the 1960s, Atlantic and Stax released famous soul music by artists like Aretha Franklin. Later, Atlantic moved into rock and pop music. They signed big acts like Led Zeppelin and Genesis. The company also helped popularize heavy metal rock. They signed many early metal bands like Black Sabbath and Van Halen.

Today, WMG is a global business with many moving parts. It employs more than 4,500 people around the world. These workers help the company operate in more than 50 different countries. The company has changed owners several times since it started. In 2004, a group led by Edgar Bronfman Jr. bought it. Later, Access Industries bought the company and remains the largest shareholder. As of 2025, they own 72% of the company's equity. This helps them control most of the voting power in the business.
