EMI Group Limited was a massive British transnational conglomerate. It was founded in London in March 1931. The name originally stood for Electric and Musical Industries. For many decades, it was a giant in two different worlds. It was a leader in the music industry. It was also a major force in electrical engineering and science. At one point, it was one of the "Big Four" record companies in the world.

The company began through a merger of two older firms. These were the Columbia Graphophone Company and the Gramophone Company. These firms had roots going back to the very start of recorded sound. In 1931, they also opened the famous Abbey Road recording studios in London. EMI produced both the music recordings themselves and the equipment used to play them. This dual focus allowed them to lead in electronic and musical technology for many years.

EMI's scientific work changed how humans see and hear the world. In 1934, a research team led by Sir Isaac Shoenberg developed the Marconi-EMI system. This was an electronic system used for television broadcasting. Later, the company created the EMI 2001 colour television camera. This specific camera was a major success in the British television industry. It was used widely from the late 1960s until the early 1990s.

During World War II, EMI's laboratories in Hayes developed critical military technology. They worked on radar equipment and microwave devices. One important device was the reflex klystron oscillator. They also developed electro-optic devices like infra-red image converters. Engineers even used analogue computers to help develop guided missiles. One notable engineer, Alan Blumlein, even received a patent for stereophonic sound in 1931. He was later killed while testing an experimental radar set.

Perhaps the most life-changing scientific achievement came from EMI's research in medical imaging. In the early 1970s, an engineer named Godfrey Hounsfield developed the first CT scanner. A CT scanner is a machine that creates detailed images of the inside of the body. This invention revolutionized how doctors treat patients. Because of this work, Hounsfield won the Nobel Prize in 1979. This achievement showed how industrial research can lead to massive medical breakthroughs.

In the music world, EMI managed many famous record labels. These included Parlophone, Virgin Records, and Capitol Records. They had a massive roster of legendary artists. The Beatles were among their most famous groups. The Beatles even used the EMI headquarters at 20 Manchester Square for some of their iconic photos. Other stars included Frank Sinatra, Nat 'King' Cole, and the Beach Boys.

EMI also maintained a massive archive. It holds over 150,000 78-rpm recordings in a temperature-controlled room in Hayes.

Despite its success, EMI faced significant financial challenges later in its history. In 2007, the company was sold to Terra Firma Capital Partners. This led to a major restructuring, and EMI became a private company. During this time, the company accumulated about $4 billion in debt. This forced Citigroup to acquire EMI in February 2011. Eventually, the music business was sold to Universal Music Group for $1.9 billion. The publishing business was sold to a consortium for about $2.2 billion.

The breakup of EMI changed the structure of the music industry. Most of its famous labels were split among different owners. Universal Music Group took over many parts. Warner Music acquired the Parlophone label. Sony Music Publishing also gained a large stake in EMI's publishing division. Even though the original conglomerate no longer exists, its influence remains. The technology and music created by EMI continue to shape our modern world.
