Music management at Sony involves several distinct business mechanisms. The recording division, Sony Music Entertainment, focuses on the production and distribution of recorded music. The publishing division, Sony Music Publishing, manages the rights to the songs themselves. In 2019, Sony merged its music publishing arm, Sony/ATV, with Sony Music Entertainment. This merger created the unified Sony Music Group on August 1, 2019. The company also manages various sub-labels to organize different types of music and artists. This structure allows them to handle everything from digital streaming to physical media like vinyl records.

Sony Music operates through many different specialized labels and divisions. Some of its most famous labels include RCA Records and Epic Records. In the past, the company also managed labels like Arista, Jive, and LaFace. These labels were brought into the fold through a merger with Bertelsmann Music Group. Sony also has a global podcast division with offices in New York, Los Angeles, and London. This division was formed by acquiring the media company Somethin' Else in 2022. They also acquired Neon Hum Media in 2024 to expand their audio storytelling. Additionally, they own a merchandising division called Ceremony of Roses to handle artist branding.

The history of the company began in 1929 as the American Record Corporation. This company was formed when several different record businesses merged together. In 1934, the corporation grew by acquiring the Columbia Phonograph Company. Later, in 1938, the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) acquired the company. Under the leadership of William S. Paley, it became the Columbia Recording Corporation. In 1966, the company reorganized to become CBS Records. Sony eventually purchased the company in 1988 for US$2 billion. The sale was finalized on January 5, 1988. Sony officially changed the name to Sony Music Entertainment on January 1, 1991.

Significant milestones occurred during the company's many years of operation. In 1953, the company launched the Epic Records label. By 1962, the Columbia Records production unit operated four plants across the United States. These plants were located in Los Angeles, Terre Haute, Bridgeport, and Pitman. In 1983, the company began supplying some of the first compact disc releases to the American market. This was possible because Sony helped develop the compact disc digital music media. In 2004, Sony and Bertelsmann created a 50–50 joint venture called Sony BMG. Sony eventually bought out Bertelsmann's stake in 2008 to regain full control.

Sony Music has a very strong international presence. Sony Music UK was founded in January 1980 and operates with standalone authority. In 2014, Sony Music UK saw its best singles success in 33 years. During that year, the label achieved 11 number one singles. At the 2015 BRIT awards, Sony Music artists won five individual awards. This included awards for Paloma Faith and Mark Ronson. The company also has a history in Canada through Sony Music Canada. This division evolved from General Distributors, which was founded in Winnipeg in 1954. Even in Greece, the company has re-established direct operations in 2024.

The company connects to many different parts of the modern media landscape. Between 2009 and 2020, Sony owned 50% of Syco Entertainment. This company operates famous reality TV formats like Got Talent and The X Factor. Sony also explores the technical side of music production. In 2017, the company decided to begin producing vinyl records internally again. They even equipped a studio in Tokyo with a cutting lathe to make master discs. This shows how the company links modern digital technology with traditional music formats. From podcasts to physical records, Sony remains a central part of how the world hears music.
