The Grammy Awards, often called the Grammys, recognize outstanding achievements in the music industry.

Presented by the Recording Academy of the United States, they are considered one of the most prestigious honors in music. The awards are part of a group of four major American entertainment honors. This group includes the Academy Awards for film, the Emmy Awards for television, and the Tony Awards for Broadway theater. Because of this status, the annual ceremony is frequently described as "music's biggest night."

The awards are divided into many specific categories to honor different types of musical work. The "General Field" contains four major awards that are not limited to any specific music genre. Album of the Year honors a performer, featured artists, songwriters, or the production team for a full album. Record of the Year recognizes a performer or production team for a single song. Song of the Year is specifically for the songwriters of a single song. Finally, Best New Artist honors a breakthrough performer who has released a recording that establishes their public identity.

To date, only three artists have won all four of these major awards. Christopher Cross achieved this in 1981, and Billie Eilish accomplished it in 2020. Eilish holds the record as the youngest artist to win all four. Adele also achieved this feat, winning Best New Artist in 2009 and the other three awards in 2012 and 2017.

Beyond the General Field, the Grammys include many other categories for specific genres and roles. These include awards for pop, rock, country, rap, and classical music. There are also honors for production, such as the Producer of the Year, Non-Classical award, which was first presented in 1974. In 2023, the Songwriter of the Year, Non-Classical award was added to the list. Because there are so many categories, the televised ceremony usually only features 10 to 12 awards. The most popular ones are selected for the broadcast. Most other awards are presented during a "Premiere Ceremony" held in the afternoon.

The history of the Grammys began with the Hollywood Walk of Fame project in the 1950s. Recording executives realized that many important industry leaders would not qualify for a star on Hollywood Boulevard. They decided to create industry awards similar to the Oscars or Emmys. One early working title for the awards was the "Eddie," intended to honor Thomas Edison. Eventually, a mail-in contest was held to choose a final name. Approximately 300 contestants submitted ideas, and the winner was Jay Danna from New Orleans. He suggested "Grammy" as an abbreviation for the gramophone, an invention by Emile Berliner.

The first Grammy ceremony took place on May 4, 1959. It was held simultaneously in two locations: the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California and the Park Sheraton Hotel in New York City. During this first event, 28 Grammys were awarded. The second ceremony in 1959 was the first to be televised, but the show was not broadcast live until 1971. Over the years, the number of awards has fluctuated as categories were added or removed. For example, a major restructuring in 2012 reduced the number of categories from 109 to 78. This change eliminated distinctions between male and female soloists and merged several genre categories.

The physical trophy is a significant symbol of this achievement. Each trophy is a gold-plated depiction of a gilded gramophone. These trophies are made and assembled by hand by Billings Artworks in Ridgway, Colorado. In 1990, the design was updated to be larger and more durable. The company replaced soft lead with a stronger zinc alloy they trademarked as "Grammium." Because the winners are not known until the announcements are made, the show uses "stunt" trophies for the broadcast. These are reused each year, while the actual engraved trophies are prepared later. By February 2009, a total of 7,578 Grammy trophies had been awarded.

The location of the ceremony has also evolved significantly. Before 1971, the awards were hosted in multiple cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Nashville. Since 2000, the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles has served as the permanent home for the ceremony.

There is even a Grammy Museum located across the street from the arena to preserve the history of the awards. The ceremony has faced challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021 and 2022, the ceremonies were postponed due to health and safety concerns. The 2022 ceremony was also moved to the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Additionally, the broadcast is changing; after fifty years on CBS, the Grammys will move to ABC, Disney+, and Hulu starting in 2027.
