Many different waters and lands surround this province. To the west lies the Makassar Strait. To the south is the Pacific Ocean. The province shares borders with South Sulawesi and Central Sulawesi to the east. It also has maritime borders with East and South Kalimantan. Two major rivers drain the land. These are the Karama River and the Lariang River. The Lariang River flows into the Makassar Strait near the town of Lariang.

This area has a very long and amazing history. Researchers led by Dr. Maxime Aubert made a big discovery here. They found very old cave art in the Leang Bulu' Sipong 4 limestone cave. These hunting scenes are more than 44,000 years old. Scientists saw drawings of people hunting a pig and a buffalo. They used things like calcite popcorn and radioactive levels to find the age. This makes them some of the oldest hunting art in the world.

Life in West Sulawesi involves many different activities. Most people work in mining, agriculture, or fishing. The population was about 1,158,651 in the year 2010. By mid-2025, the estimate was 1,525,335 people. There are many different religions practiced in the regencies. For example, Majene has a very high percentage of Muslim residents. In Mamasa, many people are Protestant. There are also Catholic, Hindu, Buddhist, and Confucian residents in the province.

Traveling through the province can be quite a journey. There is no rail transport or national highways here. Most roads are just unpaved dirt tracks. There are two small airports for flying. One is Sumarorong Airport in Mamasa. The other is Tampa Padang Airport in Mamuju. If you need a much larger airport, you must go to Makassar. That drive takes about 9.5 hours from the capital. The Balabalagan Islands are also part of the province. They sit on a coral reef that can be dangerous for ships.
