People do many jobs here. They work in mining, farming, and fishing. Some people live on the Balabalagan Islands. These islands sit on a coral reef. This reef is on an undersea bank. It can be hard for ships to sail there.

West Sulawesi is also a place of history. Scientists found very old cave art here. The art shows people hunting pigs and buffalo. These paintings are more than 44,000 years old! This makes them some of the oldest hunting scenes in the world.
