The history of this place is very long. Long ago, Hindu and Buddhist kingdoms ruled the region. Later, these kingdoms changed into Muslim sultanates. The Malay people established the Sambas Sultanate in 1609. The Mempawah Sultanate was also formed in 1740. Chinese workers came to work in gold mines around 1750. A group called the Lanfang Republic was also founded by Chinese miners. This was an independent state that worked with local sultanates.

Many different groups of people live in West Kalimantan today. These include the Dayak, Malay, Chinese, Javanese, Bugis, and Madurese.
