On June 30, 1908, a giant explosion hit Russia.

It happened near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River. A stony asteroid came from the sky. It did not hit the ground. Instead, it had an air burst. This means it exploded high in the air.

The blast was very powerful. It was like a huge bomb. It knocked down many trees in the forest.

The trees fell in a wide shape. This shape looked like a giant butterfly.

People far away felt the shock wave. It felt like an earthquake. The sky stayed bright for many days. This was because of tiny ice bits in the air.

Scientists went to the site later. They found tiny metal spheres in the soil. These spheres came from space. They found high levels of iridium, too. Iridium is a metal often found in meteors.
