A bolide is a very bright meteor. Most people call these fireballs. They look like huge lights in the sky.

Some bolides are so bright they explode in the air. Scientists call these detonating fireballs. A superbolide is even brighter. One superbolide was 51 times brighter than a full moon.

You might even hear a loud sound from them.

Geologists use the word in a different way. They use it for a large object that hits Earth. This object might be a rocky asteroid. It could also be an icy comet. These hits make very big holes called craters. One famous hit happened 66 million years ago. It made the Chicxulub crater in Mexico. This event helped end the time of the dinosaurs. We know this because of a thin layer of iridium. Iridium is a metal found in space rocks. This layer marks the boundary between old and new times.
