Bolide

space Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A bolide is a term used to describe spectacular celestial events. The meaning of the word can change depending on the scientific context. In astronomy, it usually refers to an exceptionally bright meteor. Many people call these bright meteors fireballs. Some astronomers use the term for fireballs that explode in the atmosphere. These are sometimes called detonating fireballs.

Astronomers often define a bolide by its apparent magnitude. Apparent magnitude is a way to measure how bright an object looks from Earth. A bolide is generally a fireball with an apparent magnitude of -4 or brighter. There is even a more extreme version called a superbolide. A superbolide reaches an apparent magnitude of -17 or even brighter. This makes it about 51 times brighter than a full moon.

Geologists use the word bolide in a different way. To a geologist, a bolide is a very large impacting body. This term is used for any large crater-forming body. Scientists use it when the exact composition of the object is unknown. The object could be a rocky or metallic asteroid. It could also be an icy comet made of volatiles. These volatiles include substances like water, ammonia, and methane.

History shows that humans have observed bolides for many centuries. Pliny the Elder described them in ancient times. He recorded a "spark" that fell and grew to the size of the moon. This object then returned into the heavens. This description matches the path of a fireball crossing the sky. In 1771, a fireball burst over Melun, France. This event led to an official investigation by the French Academy of Sciences.

In 1794, Ernst Chladni changed how we study these objects. He published a book proposing that meteors were small objects from space. He suggested that small bodies existed in space beyond the moon. Although people ridiculed him at first, his work was very important. Chladni's book became the starting point for the modern field of meteoritics. This helped scientists understand the origin of these space rocks.

Some bolide impacts have had massive effects on Earth's history. The most famous example is the Chicxulub crater in Mexico. This crater was caused by a bolide 66 million years ago. Scientific consensus says this event led to the extinction of all non-avian dinosaurs. Scientists can prove this by looking at the geological record. They found a thin layer of iridium at the K–Pg boundary. Iridium is a metal that provides evidence of this space impact.

There are many recent examples of these powerful events. The Sutter's Mill meteorite in California is a known example. The Chelyabinsk meteor in Russia is another famous case. Other major air bursts include the Tunguska event in Russia in 1908. There was also a superbolide in Sulawesi, Indonesia, in 2009. These events show how much energy these objects carry when they enter our atmosphere.
