Atmospheric science is the study of Earth's atmosphere and its physical processes.

This field explores how the air and its various layers work together. It is a broad science that includes several specialized branches. Meteorology focuses on the atmosphere to help with weather forecasting. Climatology examines atmospheric conditions over very long periods of time. Aeronomy studies the upper layers of the atmosphere. These scientists help us understand the complex systems that regulate our planet. This knowledge is essential for predicting weather and understanding climate change.

Atmospheric chemistry is a major branch of this science.

It studies the chemical makeup of the atmosphere on Earth and other planets. This research is multidisciplinary and connects to many other fields. It draws on physics, oceanography, geology, and even volcanology. Chemists look at how gases interact with living organisms and the environment. They study problems like acid rain, photochemical smog, and global warming. By understanding these chemical causes, researchers can test possible solutions. They can also evaluate how different government policies might affect the air.

Atmospheric physics and dynamics provide a deeper look at how the air moves.

Physicists use math and physics to model the atmosphere. They study energy transfer and radiation balancing in the air and oceans. They also use fluid flow equations to understand how weather systems form. Atmospheric dynamics specifically studies motion systems like thunderstorms and tornadoes. This includes studying jet streams and global-scale circulations. These studies aim to explain observed movements using fundamental physics principles. This helps improve weather forecasting and seasonal climate predictions.

Climatology looks at the long-term trends of our weather systems.

While meteorology studies short-term weather, climatology studies patterns over years or millennia. Climatologists study both local and global climate variability. They look at natural factors and human-induced factors like global warming. They also study past climates, such as glacial periods, to predict the future. One important area involves the interaction between the ocean and the atmosphere. For example, the El Nino-Southern Oscillation involves changing water temperatures in the Pacific. Scientists also monitor the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, which moves water through the Atlantic.

Historical figures helped establish the foundations of these sciences. Léon Teisserenc de Bort and Richard Assmann were early pioneers in the field. Today, large organizations manage complex atmospheric research projects. In the United Kingdom, the Meteorological Office supports atmospheric studies. In the United States, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) oversees weather modeling. The U.S. National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center studies the high atmosphere. These groups use advanced tools like satellites, weather balloons, and radars. Some missions, like the CALIPSO satellite, study how clouds and particles regulate the climate.

Atmospheric science uses many specific numbers to track our changing world.

According to UNEP, greenhouse gas emissions reached a record of 57.1 GtCO2e. This was a 1.3% increase from the previous year. Between 1750 and 2022, atmospheric nitrous oxide increased by roughly 25%. Scientists also track the sources of these emissions to find solutions. In 2023, 26% of GtCO2e came from power and 15% from transportation. Another 11% came from industry and 11% from agriculture. To reverse human-driven damage, researchers say cuts of nearly 42% are needed by 2030.

This science also reaches out to the rest of our solar system.

All planets have atmospheres because their gravity holds gas close. Gas giants like Jupiter keep large amounts of hydrogen and helium. Earth is unique because life processes have introduced free molecular oxygen. Other planets show very different weather patterns. Mars has planet-wide dust storms, and Jupiter has the Great Red Spot. Neptune even has holes in its atmosphere. Studying these different worlds helps us understand how planetary atmospheres work everywhere.
