Astronomers often use the word for fireballs that explode in our air. Some fireballs are so bright they are called superbolides. A superbolide can be -17 magnitude or even brighter. This means it is 51 times brighter than a full moon! These lights are truly amazing to see.

There are different ways these lights work. A meteor enters our atmosphere and glows very brightly. Some bolides are so powerful they make a loud sound. They might even explode while they are still in the sky. This is sometimes called a detonating fireball. A superbolide is a very extreme version of this event. It creates a massive amount of light for anyone watching.

People have written about these lights for a long time. Pliny the Elder wrote about them in ancient history. He described a spark that grew to the size of the moon. In 1771, a fireball burst over Melun, France. An official group called the French Academy of Sciences studied it. Later, Ernst Chladni wrote a book in 1794. He suggested that meteors were small objects from space.

Scientists use the word bolide in two main ways. Astronomers look at how bright the light appears to us. They often look for a magnitude of -4 or brighter. Geologists use the word to mean a huge impactor. This is a body that makes a large crater. They might not know if it is a rocky asteroid. It could also be an icy comet made of methane.

Some bolides have changed the history of our planet. A famous bolide hit Mexico 66 million years ago. This impact created the huge Chicxulub crater. This event led to the end of the dinosaurs. Scientists found a thin layer of iridium to prove this. Iridium is a metal that comes from space. This layer marks a special boundary in Earth's history.
