Impact event

space Maturity 9-11 Next article →

An impact event is a collision between objects in space. These objects can be asteroids, comets, or meteoroids. Most of these hits are small and have very little effect. However, large objects can cause big changes to a planet. When a huge body hits Earth, it travels very fast. It usually moves at several kilometers per second. The minimum speed for a hit is Earth's escape velocity.

Impacts work in a specific way. As an object enters the atmosphere, the air can slow it down. Some objects have enough energy to reach the ground. When they hit the solid surface, they create impact craters. These craters are large holes that shape the land. Sometimes, an object explodes in the air before it hits the ground. This is called an airburst. An airburst can release a lot of energy.

Scientists have studied these events for a long time. Eugene Shoemaker was a famous geologist who studied impacts. He helped prove that impacts changed Earth's history. In 1908, a famous event happened in Tunguska, Siberia. This event was a large explosion that damaged many trees. In 1994, we saw a comet hit Jupiter. This was the Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 impact. It was the first time we saw a collision in our solar system.

There are many important facts about these events. A large impact happened 66 million years ago at Chicxulub. This event caused a mass extinction. It also helped mammals evolve and eventually led to humans. Small asteroids strike Earth every 500,000 years on average. In 2013, a meteor hit Chelyabinsk, Russia. This was a 20-meter meteor that caused an airburst. It injured over 1,000 people.

Impacts are linked to many things we know. Some scientists think impacts brought water to Earth. Others think they brought the building blocks for life. We even think a giant impact helped form the Moon. Today, people work to stay safe from asteroids. In 2022, the Double Asteroid Redirection Test was a success. It changed the path of an asteroid for 32 minutes. This was the first time humans tested how to deflect an asteroid.
