An impact event happens when objects in space hit a planet.

These objects can be asteroids or comets. Most hits are small and do not cause much trouble. However, large hits can change a planet's history.

Some big hits might have brought water to Earth. They may have even helped life start by bringing building blocks. A huge hit 66 million years ago helped mammals grow. This eventually led to the rise of humans.

Some scientists think a giant hit even helped form the Moon.

When a rock hits, it can make a crater. A crater is a large hole in the ground.

Sometimes, a rock explodes in the air before it hits. This is called an airburst. In 2013, a meteor caused an airburst over Russia. It injured many people.

People now work to stay safe. In 2022, scientists tested a way to move an asteroid. They used a spacecraft to change its path. This test was a success.
