space Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A long time ago, space was a very busy place. Scientists think a big event happened about 4.1 to 3.8 billion years ago. They call this the Late Heavy Bombardment.

During this time, many asteroids and comets hit the planets. They hit Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. They also hit the Moon.

How do we know this happened? We have rocks from the Moon. Astronauts from the Apollo missions brought these rocks back to Earth.

These rocks were melted by huge hits. Scientists used a way to find the age of the rocks. This is called radiometric dating. The ages show that many hits happened around the same time.

One idea is called the Nice model. This idea says the giant planets moved in space. This movement pushed rocks from the asteroid belt into the planets. Other scientists disagree. They think the rocks might just come from one very large hit. We are still learning about this wild time in our solar system.
