A meteor is a bright streak in the sky.

It happens when a small space rock enters our air. We call these small rocks meteoroids. Most are tiny, like a grain of sand.

As the rock moves fast, it hits air molecules. This creates heat. The heat makes the rock glow. This creates a streak of light. This often happens in the mesosphere, which is a layer of our air. Most meteors glow for about one second.

Sometimes, many meteors appear at once. This is a meteor shower. It happens when Earth passes through dust left by a comet.

A very bright meteor is called a fireball. A fireball is brighter than any planet.

Some fireballs are so bright they are called bolides. These can even make loud sounds. The colors of a meteor can change too. They might look red, yellow, or even blue-green. The color depends on what the rock is made of.
