The tracks in Russia and Mongolia use a wide gauge. This is the distance between the two rails. The Russian gauge is 1,520 mm wide. However, China uses a standard gauge of 1,435 mm. When trains reach the Chinese border at Erenhot, they must change. Workers use special equipment to swap the bogies. A bogie is the wheel frame under a train car. This allows the same car to fit on the new tracks.

Building this railway took a long time.

A small line was first built in 1937 from Ulan-Ude to Naushki. Later, a rail line from Naushki to Ulaanbaatar was finished in November 1949. The full Trans-Mongolian line was completed in 1956. A leader named Ulanhu opened the railway on 1 January 1956. Since then, the railway has changed a lot. In 1958, it switched to diesel engines. In the 1990s, it got even better with powerful American locomotives.

You might know about long trips taken by train. The China Railway K3/4 is a famous international service. It began in 1959 to connect Beijing with Moscow. The railway also helps move coal and copper from mines to other places. It acts like a giant metal road for heavy goods. Even now, new lines are being built to connect more mines. This helps the whole region stay busy and moving.
