He spent forty years creating art that was meant for adults. Most of his work featured men who looked very strong and masculine. He used pencils to draw these characters on paper. These drawings helped change how many people saw gay men. His art showed men as powerful and confident.

His drawing style was very unique and bold. He often drew men with exaggerated muscles and large features. These men frequently wore tight clothing made of leather or denim. He drew many different types of workers and rebels. Some were sailors, construction workers, or lumberjacks. Others were part of the biker subculture. These characters looked untamed and self-empowered.

Laaksonen's career grew through many different stages. He was born in Kaarina, Finland, in 1920. In 1939, he moved to Helsinki to study advertising. During World War II, he served in the Finnish Army. After the war, he returned to his studies in 1945. In 1956, he sent drawings to an American magazine. The editor Bob Mizer gave him the name Tom of Finland in 1957.

It was not always easy to share his art. In the 1950s and 1960s, strict rules limited what magazines could show. Many magazines would crop his drawings to make them less explicit. He also ran a small business by mailing drawings to people. By the 1970s, laws changed and he could publish more openly. He even created a fictional character named Kake for a comic series. He produced about 3,500 illustrations during his long career.

Today, his work is kept safe for the future. In 1984, he started the Tom of Finland Foundation. This group is located at TOM House in Los Angeles. The foundation helps protect his art and supports erotic art in general. It even works toward starting a museum for this kind of art. Laaksonen lived in Los Angeles and died in 1991. His art remains a major part of gay culture and history.
