He spent forty years making art with pencils. He made about 3,500 drawings on paper.

Tom drew men who looked very strong. He used a style with exaggerated muscles. His men often wore tight clothes like leather or denim. He drew many types of men. Some were sailors, bikers, or lumberjacks. His art showed a type of masculine beauty. In the 1950s, many people saw gay men as weak. Tom's art helped change this idea. It showed men who were powerful and self-assured.

His art was made for adults. In the early days, it was hard to show such art. Many magazines used his drawings but cropped them to be less explicit.

Later, he could publish more open work.

In 1984, he started the Tom of Finland Foundation. This group helps protect his art. It also supports erotic art in general. The foundation is in Los Angeles. Tom died in 1991. His art remains very important to many people.
