Tinnitus

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some people hear sounds when there is no noise outside. This is called tinnitus. The word comes from a Latin word that means "to ring."

The sound might be a ring, a buzz, or a hiss. It can be loud or soft. It might come from one ear or both.

Most people can live well with these sounds. About 10 to 15 percent of people have it. Tinnitus is often a sign of another issue. The most common cause is hearing loss. This can happen from getting older. It can also happen from loud noises. Some medicines can even cause it.

There are two main types of tinnitus. Most people have subjective tinnitus. This means only the person can hear the sound. Other people cannot hear it at all. A rare type is called objective tinnitus. In this case, a doctor might hear the sound using a stethoscope. This might happen if the sound comes from blood flow or muscle twitches.
