Tinnitus

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Have you ever heard a ringing in your ears? Some people hear sounds even when it is very quiet. This experience is called tinnitus. The name comes from the Latin word "tinnire," which means "to ring."

Most people hear a ringing sound. However, it can also sound like buzzing, hissing, clicking, or roaring. These sounds might be loud or soft. They can be high or low in pitch. Some people hear them in one ear or both.

Tinnitus is not a disease itself. Instead, it is a symptom of something else happening in the body. One way it works involves the brain and the ears. When a person has hearing loss, the auditory system might try to compensate. The brain tries to amplify sounds that it can no longer hear well. This can cause the nerve cells to become overexcited. This overexcitement creates the sensation of sound where there is none. This is often called a homeostatic response.

Many different things can cause these sounds to start. The most common cause is hearing loss from getting older. This is known as presbycusis. Damage from loud noises is another very common cause. Even earwax or ear infections can cause it. Some people get tinnitus from certain medications. Over 260 medicines have been reported to cause it as a side effect. Other causes include head injuries or even migraines.

There are two main types of tinnitus. Most people have subjective tinnitus. This means only the person can hear the sound. Doctors cannot hear it with their own ears. A much rarer type is called objective tinnitus. In this case, a doctor might hear the sound using a stethoscope. This might happen if the sound comes from muscle twitches or blood flow. Some people also have pulsatile tinnitus. This is a sound that beats in time with a person's pulse.

Most people can adapt to these sounds quite well. About 10 to 15 percent of people experience tinnitus. Only 1 to 2 percent of people find it to be a severe problem. For some, it can make it hard to concentrate. It can also be linked to anxiety or depression. Doctors use tools like an audiogram to check hearing. They might also use an MRI to look at the body. To help prevent it, it is good to avoid very loud noises.
