Hearing loss happens when someone cannot hear sounds as well as they should. This can be a partial problem or a total inability to hear, which is called deafness.

Some people are born with hearing loss, while others get it later in life. In children, this can make it hard to learn spoken language. For adults, it might make talking to friends or working harder.

It can happen in one ear or both ears. This can be a temporary issue or something that lasts forever.

Sound works by traveling in waves into our ears. Hearing loss occurs when these waves damage sensitive tissues inside.

One common cause is the loss of tiny hair cells in the cochlea, which is a part of the inner ear. There are three main types of hearing loss: conductive, sensorineural, and mixed. Conductive loss involves how sound moves through the ear. Sensorineural loss involves the inner ear or the nerve. Mixed loss is a combination of both. Doctors use a tool called an audiometer to measure how loud a sound must be for you to hear it.

Scientists and doctors have studied hearing for a long time. They use decibels to measure the intensity of sound. A sound at 0 dB is the softest sound an average person can hear. Sounds become uncomfortably loud above 90 dB. At 115 dB, a sound can actually cause pain.

Testing is very important for everyone, including newborns. Experts like the World Health Organization give advice to help protect hearing. They suggest young people limit loud music to one hour a day. This helps prevent damage from loud noises.

Many people around the world live with hearing loss. As of 2013, about 1.1 billion people have some degree of hearing loss. This causes disability for about 466 million people.

About 65 million people had their hearing loss start during childhood. In some places, like New Zealand, there are programs to help pay for hearing aids. Some companies even use a monthly fee to make them easier to afford. However, many people in low and middle-income countries still find it hard to get help. This shows how much access to care can change depending on where you live.

There are many ways to help people communicate. Some people use hearing aids or cochlear implants to hear better. Others use sign language to share ideas.

Some people also learn to read lips. For many in the Deaf community, sign language is a big part of their culture. They may see themselves as having a difference rather than a disability. Using these tools can help people stay connected to the world. It can also help prevent feeling lonely or isolated.
