These experts study the ears and the systems that keep us upright. They help people with hearing loss and work to prevent ear damage. Audiologists can help anyone from the time they are born until they are very old. They are very important for helping people communicate with the world around them.

To help people, audiologists use many different ways to test hearing. They might use behavioral tests where a person responds to sounds. They also use measurements called otoacoustic emissions or electrophysiologic tests. These steps help them see if a person has normal sensitivity to sounds. If they find a problem, they look for where it is. They check the outer ear, the middle ear, or the inner ear. They may even check the auditory nerve or the central nervous system.

History tells us that the word "audiology" is not very old. People have used the term in books since 1946. We do not know exactly who first thought of the name. One person named Hallowell Davis is credited with naming it in the 1940s. He thought the old name sounded like a way to teach ear wiggling. The field grew because many veterans had hearing loss after World War II. This led to the first university course at Northwestern University in 1946.

There are many facts about how this job works today. The International Society of Audiology was started in 1952. In the United States, many audiologists now earn a doctor of audiology degree. This is called an AuD. To get this, students must complete 75 hours of study after their first degree. In Brazil, the University of São Paulo began its program in 1977. In Turkey, the first master's program started at Hacettepe University in 1968.

Audiologists do many things that connect to our daily lives. They help people use hearing aids to make sounds louder. They also help with cochlear implants, which are tools placed in the ear. Some audiologists help people who have tinnitus, which is a sound in the ear. They also help with balance issues like benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. They even design ear plugs to keep our ears safe from loud noises. They make sure our world stays a place where we can listen and move easily.
