Most pain stays on one side of the head. It often feels like a throbbing or pulsing sensation. Many people feel sick to their stomach too. They may also feel dizzy or have trouble thinking. Some people are sensitive to light and sound.

A migraine can happen in different stages. Some people feel warning signs two days before the pain. This is called the prodrome phase.

An aura can last from five to 60 minutes. After the pain stops, a person might feel very tired. This is called the postdrome phase.

Many things can trigger an attack. These include lack of sleep or skipping meals. Changes in hormones can also help start a migraine. Doctors think genes and the environment play a role. About 1.16 billion people in the world have migraines. Women often have more migraines than men.
