Syncope happens when the brain gets less blood. This often comes from low blood pressure. Before it happens, you might feel strange. You may feel lightheaded or sweaty. Your skin might look pale. You might even feel sick to your stomach.

There are three main types of syncope. The first type is neurally mediated. This is the most common type. It happens when blood vessels expand too much. This makes the heart rate slow down. It can be caused by pain or strong feelings. Some people faint when they see blood. Others faint from coughing or even swallowing.

The second type involves the heart or blood vessels. This can be serious. It might happen if the heart has an abnormal rhythm. We call this arrhythmia. An arrhythmia is when the heart beats too fast or too slow. The third type happens when you change position. For example, you might faint when standing up fast. This can happen if you are dehydrated.

Doctors use tests like an ECG to find the cause. An ECG checks the electrical signals in your heart.
