Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against your artery walls. Your heart pumps blood through these tubes. Doctors use two numbers to show this pressure. The top number is systolic pressure. The bottom number is diastolic pressure.

Hypotension is when your blood pressure is too low. This happens if the top number is below 90. It also happens if the bottom number is below 60. For many people, low pressure does not cause problems. But for others, it can cause symptoms. You might feel dizzy or tired. You might also feel weak or have a headache. Some people may even faint.

Many things can cause low pressure. It can happen if you do not drink enough water. It can also happen if you have a lot of blood loss. Some medicines can make it happen too. Even a big meal can cause a drop in pressure. This is called postprandial hypotension. This happens because blood moves to your gut to help you digest food. Doctors can treat this by giving you more fluids. They may also use medicine to help.
